Does anybody remember the card punch and the card reader machines? It was in the early eighties when I took my first computer programming class. It was Fortran. I remember spending endless hours trying to get the simplest program to run. First I had to get a stack of cards. I punched the program on them at the card punch machine. Then I had to get in line in order to wait my turn to put them through the card reader. When I finally got that done, I had to wait around or take a walk until the print out came through the printer on those god awful greenish and whitish huge print out sheets, only to find out that I had put a slash or a comma in the wrong place, so I could not even tell if my program was functional or not. It always took several runs to clean up my program from the syntax errors and begin to see if it was actually doing anything like what it was meant to do in the first place. What was the result? I ended up dropping out of the classes all together. I simply did not have enough time to play around with such an ineffective and time consuming process.
You may well ask where am I going with this? It is very simple. Anybody who aspires to become a successful webmaster needs to seriously consider the element of time before he jumps into any program where he spends a lot of money to learn how to build and maintain his or her own website. Chances are you already have a job and quite possibly you also have a life. Anybody who promises you that you can learn the ins and outs of being a web master by spending two hours a day is seriously exaggerating and definitely assumes that you have the use of a high speed connection to the Internet. You can be sure that a dial up connection when you are trying to create and update your website is going to drive you insane if you have to wait the turtle like speed of the dial up. Just like I was frustrated trying to learn Fortran on a card punch card reader set up, so you are going to be frustrated trying to accomplish the multitude of complex tasks that are required to do as a serious web master on a dial up connection. So do your self a favor and start you quest of web master competency by getting at least the speed of a DSL connection behind you.
